AutomaticTransmission Servicing
Automatic transmissions are highly sophisticated systems, controlled by both electronics and hydraulic pressure, and they depend on clean, filtered lubricants reaching every component within the transmission. It’s equally important that the transmission oil is adequately cooled, as this helps protect the many moving internal parts. These kinds of jobs play a huge role in the Regular maintenance of your vehicle, helping to not only extend the life of your transmission but also help you avoid costly repairs.
Around 60% of vehicles with transmission problems that come through our workshop have failed because of a lack of servicing. All automatic transmissions are serviceable, despite what you may have heard, and servicing is key to detecting and identifying potential premature failures in your transmission.
All of our reconditioned transmissions are completely stripped, inspected and cleaned. We install new parts, including gaskets, seals, clutches, piston rings, bands, and filters.
The valve body is completely stripped, cleaned & vacuum tested to ensure the valves are operating correctly, and any worn valves are then reamed and replaced with oversized valves. All our reconditioned transmissions also come with a reconditioned torque converter.
Manual TransmissionRepairs and Maintenance
In addition to automatic transmission servicing, we also offer manual transmission repairs and maintenance. Now, there are many misconceptions about manual geaboxes, with unusual noises being one of the most common concerns. However, noises don’t always mean the gearbox is the problem. Misdiagnosing the issue can be costly, which is why accurate diagnosis is so important.
Noise in a manual gearbox can come from several sources. A common misconception is that if the noise disappears when the clutch is pressed, the thrust bearing must be at fault and the clutch needs replacing. In reality, it’s the opposite; the thrust bearing only engages when the clutch is pressed, which actually stops the gears and bearings from spinning. For this reason, getting a professional diagnosis (and even a second opinion) is always recommended.
The second most common gearbox issue is ‘crunching’ when selecting gears, often caused by a worn clutch. When this happens, the gears may keep spinning even after the pedal is pressed, stopping the synchromesh and slider from aligning properly and leading to rough gear changes. Left unresolved, this can damage the synchros and gears, with metal fragments causing further wear to bearings and increasing repair costs.
Sometimes ‘crunching’ can be caused by premature wearing of the 2nd & 3rd synchromesh, which are the most commonly used gears. This issue is especially common in vehicles driven in stop-and-start conditions, such as city traffic.
